<br />
This quilt has been hanging around for two years, screaming at me to finish it off. I had a devil of a time deciding on how I wanted to quilt it.<br />

It feels good to have it down and done.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhrKvgIHnYvYW5vmUgQBFLKxebCrEBHfTWxEv5e2EVQiEK0ZXp_WegGEj_y5hdEag1yyonAgBbJ1HpGaCbbVgfpzH9jPYIBEhDQO8LF5acCSQ0K_FS-VgyBvRN3jCsLhfsFDdcqY01FM_o/s1600/IMG_7009.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="382" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhrKvgIHnYvYW5vmUgQBFLKxebCrEBHfTWxEv5e2EVQiEK0ZXp_WegGEj_y5hdEag1yyonAgBbJ1HpGaCbbVgfpzH9jPYIBEhDQO8LF5acCSQ0K_FS-VgyBvRN3jCsLhfsFDdcqY01FM_o/s640/IMG_7009.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Not only is it done, it's all washed and soft. Simon, of course, had to test that out.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEQAA_7qUjwwSDT8qAAYuFpZBMZRhZ4AWI6_PlhkVB8LGX7ytXyhcQMldTK24jrgqfopJuFReeEMwHaKsQOvLKmh3ZMq1SlwH1k2T7uxKLmU1_VzaGB61mSLRRzCN6S_LN7uMOJCfBWvzI/s1600/IMG_7010.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEQAA_7qUjwwSDT8qAAYuFpZBMZRhZ4AWI6_PlhkVB8LGX7ytXyhcQMldTK24jrgqfopJuFReeEMwHaKsQOvLKmh3ZMq1SlwH1k2T7uxKLmU1_VzaGB61mSLRRzCN6S_LN7uMOJCfBWvzI/s640/IMG_7010.JPG" width="548" /></a></div>
<br />
I used Aurifil 50 wt white thread for the whole project - top and bobbin. Quilted beautifully.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Simon is pointing out one of his favorite blocks. I combined many of <a href="http://freemotionquilting.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Leah Day's</a> fills within some organic shapes surrounded with straight lines.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
The front is fun, but so is the back. I just used fleece as the batting and backing, just two layers. This whole project was just an experiment to see how well quilting blocks using fleece and joining the using this <a href="http://colormequilty.blogspot.com/2012/01/try-new-things-tnt-thursday-qayg_12.html" target="_blank">QAYG method. </a><br />

<br />
The quilting shows up really nicely on the back, even better after washing.<br />

I've been a fan of Leah Day's for a very long time and she is the reason I'm somewhat fearless in challenging myself to try new fills and techniques.<br />

I have finished quilting all of the blocks of my experiment with QAYG fleece backed quilt. </div>

<br />
I had some fun quilting the last few blocks<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I joined the first two blocks<br />

<br />
I was nervous to try out how well the blocks would go together, but it went together just fine. I did make the back strip used to join the block slightly smaller (1 1/8" instead of 1 1/4") than the tutorial calls for (<a href="http://colormequilty.blogspot.com/2012/01/try-new-things-tnt-thursday-qayg_12.html" target="_blank">click here for the tutorial</a>).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7fXvDxiV81FLLu5W6OMw0TbTalDh2JHi4YeVIe5xrhl7JuP-_d7nc02ZxF2uYcfnmwMEDUkWglFAab-VAwe9beKI8oGV_-ck45sxVf_8NdUvOkoI2-xpbnme9HlG-9FhE2mTyYkxd1yVh/s1600/IMG_20150914_065248662.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7fXvDxiV81FLLu5W6OMw0TbTalDh2JHi4YeVIe5xrhl7JuP-_d7nc02ZxF2uYcfnmwMEDUkWglFAab-VAwe9beKI8oGV_-ck45sxVf_8NdUvOkoI2-xpbnme9HlG-9FhE2mTyYkxd1yVh/s640/IMG_20150914_065248662.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
The joining technique worked perfectly. I'm glad I choose to make the back strip smaller.<br />
<br />
<br />
The question now is, how long before I can finish this project an get it off my design wall??!!<br />

</div>
I might not have been blogging lately, but that doesn't mean I haven't been quilting. I have three projects that have been hanging around far too long, they are now finished.<br />
<br />
The first project is a <a href="http://freemotionquilting.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Leah Day panel</a> I purchased from <a href="http://www.spoonflower.com/fabric/1607613" target="_blank">Spoonflower.</a><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggMiOvBFDGrPf1uQhh0HdnZZDu5ygIfNJyxjxQRDRXY7F82DyGVQz1Z3Wlr2w2NRrMcXc6sDOPe73upGheARmHojGQ6Sc-uzYmkI8Flh5iUf1ViDlF4J00ESpDteoNE0x7WBYiKcT3-nq0/s1600/IMG_6930.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggMiOvBFDGrPf1uQhh0HdnZZDu5ygIfNJyxjxQRDRXY7F82DyGVQz1Z3Wlr2w2NRrMcXc6sDOPe73upGheARmHojGQ6Sc-uzYmkI8Flh5iUf1ViDlF4J00ESpDteoNE0x7WBYiKcT3-nq0/s640/IMG_6930.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I have finished quilting eons ago, I just needed to finish it with a facing. I read abut how to do it, been told it was easy and still I procrastinated.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEKU-dALVDOpwtNnWtn82HsHCO4R25e3STYupMDe9nfl6ADYkH4Z7BfvYi75J9AX0T9jGVZ0GrVTvws35SIFyoY4lxFw-yEU006ziaO9aFmEb0JwQ3LrfdH-SPmhmjUFe4NiF4CM2SKGvQ/s1600/IMG_6931.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEKU-dALVDOpwtNnWtn82HsHCO4R25e3STYupMDe9nfl6ADYkH4Z7BfvYi75J9AX0T9jGVZ0GrVTvws35SIFyoY4lxFw-yEU006ziaO9aFmEb0JwQ3LrfdH-SPmhmjUFe4NiF4CM2SKGvQ/s640/IMG_6931.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
I don't know why I so stubbornly avoided doing a facing, it was easy. I followed the <a href="http://thesillyboodilly.blogspot.com/2012/09/tutorial-super-duper-easy-way-to-face.html" target="_blank">tutorial at Silly BooDilly blog. </a><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYOZX2ZZtdZs2zoBNOPVCDQslHeJbDTOHUUYn_HUbJeV_08OJUhOEMPu6zlKtEIFmFAFmU5sogob-chRWJdsIw_a6aY6qUN36Xo4ph6ilZMOpizg70aDSnOUP5IoBbypk9JVIGGAXnt_Vf/s1600/IMG_6934.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYOZX2ZZtdZs2zoBNOPVCDQslHeJbDTOHUUYn_HUbJeV_08OJUhOEMPu6zlKtEIFmFAFmU5sogob-chRWJdsIw_a6aY6qUN36Xo4ph6ilZMOpizg70aDSnOUP5IoBbypk9JVIGGAXnt_Vf/s640/IMG_6934.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The second project was a guild challenge to take a traditional block and make it modern. I chose an Ohio Star.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhsKKmcJJVh39UYlBnZvdWP1lhEqo7vc4B4zVimzV5hi-nrgLekgK_260CLEp4POqs8o9vxSOyqYmqc2wXvIx70f_hkNEbrkslfp-23TY2dCN8qEbAn-D0DlCFAoqYKrUI3NtoqPk6QluiB/s1600/IMG_6935.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhsKKmcJJVh39UYlBnZvdWP1lhEqo7vc4B4zVimzV5hi-nrgLekgK_260CLEp4POqs8o9vxSOyqYmqc2wXvIx70f_hkNEbrkslfp-23TY2dCN8qEbAn-D0DlCFAoqYKrUI3NtoqPk6QluiB/s640/IMG_6935.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
The guidelines were to make it 24" wide by any length. So I made the star with an improv method.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7C4ZsznS9ejV7Zi1umYOAAJzlW5iiePmBOQdcFF9QjINGDWR-P-Bh3n_k8kajKJsl1ABUDh_Mo9A7INaGVMQpnlbXiPpYTjJp53YYrs0PUVmiCHDINuDCKmWEc_ll0W6Strhf8z1rJygc/s1600/IMG_6936.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7C4ZsznS9ejV7Zi1umYOAAJzlW5iiePmBOQdcFF9QjINGDWR-P-Bh3n_k8kajKJsl1ABUDh_Mo9A7INaGVMQpnlbXiPpYTjJp53YYrs0PUVmiCHDINuDCKmWEc_ll0W6Strhf8z1rJygc/s640/IMG_6936.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiC-ezj8lExxk7jBQoOxg2hGLLmMS6ebV7XC1iV2Z95qhxllH1QGvouBRBpHprrB-Bli7QXG_Hlwas5cAsP2bqTxxq2wkjsMiY0shkxHmJDOfaaKLe2s4C2ooIuOLhBNhybuV37935inHIH/s1600/IMG_6938.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiC-ezj8lExxk7jBQoOxg2hGLLmMS6ebV7XC1iV2Z95qhxllH1QGvouBRBpHprrB-Bli7QXG_Hlwas5cAsP2bqTxxq2wkjsMiY0shkxHmJDOfaaKLe2s4C2ooIuOLhBNhybuV37935inHIH/s640/IMG_6938.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
I had to add a few bits of my favorite things; corgis and horses.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSRc00gRmnDJA3RIGIC84pb_8ptYy9uKdNe35XU73XPf2UhSMDpWoBtk4VbTOffRDrFSIhNncBCnEMkfihbFz7KLMAqU_LXbcGCbH4TO2Qq9Qd9-DxLPKz_0aLib3bhf6JxGBjMF6Wxn2L/s1600/IMG_6835.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSRc00gRmnDJA3RIGIC84pb_8ptYy9uKdNe35XU73XPf2UhSMDpWoBtk4VbTOffRDrFSIhNncBCnEMkfihbFz7KLMAqU_LXbcGCbH4TO2Qq9Qd9-DxLPKz_0aLib3bhf6JxGBjMF6Wxn2L/s640/IMG_6835.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I also used the facing technique on this project also.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhqvMz4WY6GN6JrX58CRXQjV_uRTffvrpmzQ6Qggym0loyFQ2G1yLyPjHHpVD8nGf2Fc5YPrCBA1JKPzJ9GENQx1RjKhVzwwQjvSKHNhjPXECWngF_vCz2odAeD-9tQShYpi_4m7MsNZbM/s1600/IMG_6939.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhqvMz4WY6GN6JrX58CRXQjV_uRTffvrpmzQ6Qggym0loyFQ2G1yLyPjHHpVD8nGf2Fc5YPrCBA1JKPzJ9GENQx1RjKhVzwwQjvSKHNhjPXECWngF_vCz2odAeD-9tQShYpi_4m7MsNZbM/s640/IMG_6939.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
My third project was my Lizzy House Meadow Quilt; Galloping through the Meadow.<br />

I have it all basted and have begun quilting it. Since some of the fabric I used had some metallic gold in the fabric, I thought I would continue that theme and quilt it with metallic thread.<br />

I'm really enjoying this project and given that this is just a small wall hanging I may just be able to finish it quickly.<br />

I still love horses. So when my quilt guild had a "blox made modern" challenge" I thought I would incorporate some of that lovely Cotton and Steele Mustang fabric. This is for every little girl who has "Stars in Your Eyes" every time they see horses.<br />

The challenge was to take a traditional block and make it modern. So I took an Ohio Star block and made it modern.<br />
<br />
It is modern because:<br />
1. Scale: this block is 24"x 45"<br />
2. Wonky/Improv: the center is not square, the star points don't match<br />
3. Lots of negative space with solid fabric<br />
<br />
I plan to back it and quilt it, leaving it this size for a nice wall hanging.<br />
<br />

</div>
It has been wayyyyyyy too long since I posted something here, but <a href="http://colormequilty.blogspot.com/2015/05/sad-news.html" target="_blank">losing my dear corgi buddy Humphrey </a>was very difficult. Both my vet and best friend said don't wait to get a new pup, start looking right away, but know exactly what you want. I said I wanted a slightly older (not a puppy) corgi, different coloring than Humphrey, maybe a tri-color, maybe a show dog that didn't make it in the ring. Guess what? The universe provided in spades! Meet Simon Kenton., aka (just plain) Simon. Registered name Edenfaire Treat or Treat (he was born on Halloween 2013). He was supposed to be a show dog, but for some reason, he didn't quite make it. Yay for me! Simon has already stolen my heart.<br />

Simon is a handsome boy and very, very sweet. He has lots to learn about being a family pet, but he's smart and is figuring it out as we go. Yesterday Simon and I were finally able to spend some quality time in my sewing room. Yippee, Skippee! My husband likes to name the dogs, so <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simon_Kenton" target="_blank">click here to learn more about the origin of Simon Kenton</a><br />

I plan to be back much more frequently, of course that does depend on Simon cooperating.<br />

He was older and there was nothing anyone could have done. He is now in heaven chasing bunnies, chipmunks and squirrels. My mom and dad will have to watch over him now. Goodbye sweet prince, I will love you forever!<br />

I wasn't feeling well and I just couldn't get my machine to cooperate. Sometimes it's best just to walk away and try again another day. When I came back to it, it was working smoothly. Can sewing machines feel our energy?<br />
<br />
Sew today I will post two blocks to get you going. Please link up if you want to show off some of your work. I know I would love to see your FMQ.<br />
<br />
My first block is very organic and whimsical. I started with the center, stitching two curved lines from end to end and echoing each of them. Then I filled in between the two lines with <a href="http://freemotionquilting.blogspot.com/2010/05/day-176-spiral-matrix.html" target="_blank">Leah Day's Spiral Matrix (click here for her video)</a>. I think Spiral Matrix is one of my favorite designs. It really doesn't have to be perfect to look great. Personally, I like when it's not perfect, proves I'm not a computer guided robot. Continuing on, within the orange block I just stitched straight lined back and forth. I think the straight lines give your eyes a place to rest and lets the cool Spiral Matrix pop. Around the outside, I just stitched wavy lines that randomly intersect. This is a great example that if your fabric is printed/busy, it doesn't really matter what you quilt because your can't hardly see it.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIPZkCbwhIyfw19g9qgRvfeaJRUsNn2pZ7aHQkUg-skPUV0ObxeBaFkszikon5YRkKQq4hlQ8vbWGcRpQs0mXG3SHCW9KJUpik9NyOOFo6HLEOjJPqVBcf17EvdughUJhrImhCqhiuLPdL/s1600/IMG_20150420_080039263-001.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIPZkCbwhIyfw19g9qgRvfeaJRUsNn2pZ7aHQkUg-skPUV0ObxeBaFkszikon5YRkKQq4hlQ8vbWGcRpQs0mXG3SHCW9KJUpik9NyOOFo6HLEOjJPqVBcf17EvdughUJhrImhCqhiuLPdL/s1600/IMG_20150420_080039263-001.jpg" height="360" width="640" /></a></div>
I really love how you can see the stitching on the back. Fleece is so much fun to quilt.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjqINaIB_sgmTmg8gcH62pQpJEDH5TLOG9dOo7Dw-KmexDv4eh1-A2YZVSBkGzqNsFJQDdB1PRSdKSt6WlX9MWstwIYJNcWx8N03f66OPNgujpNnQKoEC1IzARrlRgPggtDdWO8_4NDGFAE/s1600/IMG_20150420_080115003-001.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjqINaIB_sgmTmg8gcH62pQpJEDH5TLOG9dOo7Dw-KmexDv4eh1-A2YZVSBkGzqNsFJQDdB1PRSdKSt6WlX9MWstwIYJNcWx8N03f66OPNgujpNnQKoEC1IzARrlRgPggtDdWO8_4NDGFAE/s1600/IMG_20150420_080115003-001.jpg" height="372" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
This is the next block I decided to quilt. Remember, this project is about trying out some new fillers and putting them together to see how they look. Have fun with this.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiDhTJf5_vOqajzwoE1knMMpsJIp0S8VkKh6TDKPBC2Fmp13jBV9VXwC6saAReucZHN4g-AsJ7nr2IPnmfWVp07sDDGX94kYH473l-VG21SEMLohcYxNubmQjT9fwQXPvtr-6C7D209_3N/s1600/IMG_20150424_071542711_HDR-001.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiDhTJf5_vOqajzwoE1knMMpsJIp0S8VkKh6TDKPBC2Fmp13jBV9VXwC6saAReucZHN4g-AsJ7nr2IPnmfWVp07sDDGX94kYH473l-VG21SEMLohcYxNubmQjT9fwQXPvtr-6C7D209_3N/s1600/IMG_20150424_071542711_HDR-001.jpg" height="360" width="640" /></a></div>
Again, I started with stitching some random wiggly lines and echoed them. I filled them in with <a href="http://freemotionquilting.blogspot.com/2009/09/day-48-pointy-paisley.html" target="_blank">Pointy Paisley (another Leah Day filler)</a>. On the outside of this shape, my lines are now at a 45 degree angle. On the printed boarder, I just did back and forth lines. On the outer most stripe, I stitched a foundation line of back and forth triangles, I didn't mark them. I finished it off with straight back and forth lines to fill in the top half of the triangles.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Let your imaginations run wild, just stitch something. The take away from this week is: If it isn't working, you're tired or don't feel well, walk away and come back another day. Enjoy your quilting.<br />

I wanted to mix it up, so I just did some wiggly lines and filled it in with some paisley, <a href="http://www.leahday.com/project0paisley/" target="_blank">click here to see Leah Day's video on how to do paisley.</a><br />

Don't worry about perfection, it will be lovely no matter what. In the border of the block I did various sized circles and on the other stripes just followed the wiggles. The most important thing is to have fun.<br />

She knit and felted two bags recently and asked if I would line them and add a zipper to one of them. Yikes, I'm not a huge fan of this type of sewing, especially zippers, but this stepdaughter keeps me stocked in homemade canned stock. How in the world could I say no? So I said sure!<br />
<br />
We dug through my stash and found some fabric (what a surprise) that was fun and went with the bags. There was an open sew at my local quilt shop (<a href="http://www.e-quilterscorner.com/" target="_blank">Quilters Corner</a>) and I thought that this was the perfect project to do - nothing like having a little moral support!<br />
<br />
The first bag just needed a lining - I even lined the top flap. <br />

And of course added interior pockets. <br />
<br />
The second bag was a little harder. I added a two-way purse zipper and a lining. <br />

<br />
I was able to give them to her yesterday for Easter. I think this must have been a record turn-around time, she only gave them to me last weekend or so.<br />
<br />
Well, I'm off to work. I have to pay for this hobby some how!<br />

</div>
Okay, so it has taken some time to get this quilt-a-long started. I have all of the blocks pieced and backed, ready to quilt. Remember: you can choose to follow this quilt OR design your own quilt. It can be an alternate grid like this OR a more traditional layout. The most important part is quilting.<br />
<br />
This quilt was created with various sized pieces of solid fabric and a number of different strips from a Alison Glass jelly roll (2 1/2" wide by the width of the fabric)<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEieROQIKFNSxPuMtrdulgDufC51rR1xUosut02wELX9grkYUxnbrh5pwGq4bIz_9I4KqzqF0Q8iaNxh7FR9j4jiUCodEmLNHnexorqhXwJptWcyCe5zy7IOcnMRbV7Ltjzm7mIxZvZ3avAY/s1600/IMG_20150331_194720.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEieROQIKFNSxPuMtrdulgDufC51rR1xUosut02wELX9grkYUxnbrh5pwGq4bIz_9I4KqzqF0Q8iaNxh7FR9j4jiUCodEmLNHnexorqhXwJptWcyCe5zy7IOcnMRbV7Ltjzm7mIxZvZ3avAY/s1600/IMG_20150331_194720.jpg" height="640" width="466" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Here are the blocks. Some will need to be trimmed, but since this is a quilt-as-you-go project, I saw no reason to do that now.</td></tr>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">I started quilting this small block as a warm-up to larger, more complicated FMQ blocks.</td></tr>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFAKK7TkN_-fcgGfiKCJQUJcruI5FzDtspJchs43BKUUlI4VFurnOSct2liUvejgXwYw6_Q7e-6JQ5seS8yJ2S1TXSrdN1-2xNbQRopnk_2_J0zt5LEVBbShGWgprdqkq1Ki6n3jEuwzk2/s1600/Back+Block+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFAKK7TkN_-fcgGfiKCJQUJcruI5FzDtspJchs43BKUUlI4VFurnOSct2liUvejgXwYw6_Q7e-6JQ5seS8yJ2S1TXSrdN1-2xNbQRopnk_2_J0zt5LEVBbShGWgprdqkq1Ki6n3jEuwzk2/s1600/Back+Block+1.jpg" height="360" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The FMQ on this block: started with stitching in the ditch, then a square spiral to the center of each colored block, echo lines (free-hand) on the white pieces between each spiral. On the outer strips, random jagged "teeth". I used Aurifil 50wt white thread in both the top and the bottom.<br />
<br />
This will get you started on the first column, if you choose to follow this pattern.<br />

I had several friends who thought that would be fun. I'm at a conference for work (have to do something to afford my fabric addiction), but I wanted to give you some information on gathering your fabric and supplies.<br />

I'm planning on using plain old fleece for the batting and backing, but feel free to use separate acting and backing.<br />

I'm really looking forward to sharing and learning from across the quilty community.<br />

I miss the practice and the camaraderie. So my question is, would anyone else like to join up to quilt?<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
The idea came to me when I spied a Alison Glass jelly roll. I just fell in love with the colors.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjqTMFy_e6xR21JYMVSiJe9PpY00gu2dv92ovOgSP-wnzQp6Q04pboNrSSsHetQmeTfccNC2dgom4k392jcVtF0ceUK928QhTYWZqVUvOgulaODgy_heDuP7i2FSWTDOesFPz4K9TILV3c/s1600/IMG_20150306_203736070_HDR.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="display: inline !important; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjqTMFy_e6xR21JYMVSiJe9PpY00gu2dv92ovOgSP-wnzQp6Q04pboNrSSsHetQmeTfccNC2dgom4k392jcVtF0ceUK928QhTYWZqVUvOgulaODgy_heDuP7i2FSWTDOesFPz4K9TILV3c/s1600/IMG_20150306_203736070_HDR.jpg" height="640" width="360" /></a></div>
I already had a ton of solids and some mini charms I picked up at QuiltCon. I just cut them into various sizes. Yesterday I spent the day surrounding them with the jelly roll stripes.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I don't have them all done yet and the layout hasn't been finalized. But look at all that lovely open space to quilt. I thought that the alternate grid and various sizes would give us a chance to experiment with some different fills and motifs.<br />
<br />
If anyone else would like to play along, you can create your own layout or I can give you the dimensions of my blocks. I could have a link-up on Fridays with a block a week and we can share our questions with each other and hopefully our solutions. If you don't have a blog, you can post your picture on Flickr or even my Facebook page.<br />
<br />
I'm looking forward to hearing from you and linking up with <span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20.7900009155273px;"> </span><span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20.7900009155273px;"><span style="line-height: 20.7900009155273px;"><a href="http://www.patchworktimes.com/" style="color: #6699cc; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">Design Wall Monday at Patchwork Times</a></span></span><br />

This is seven yards of strips in random widths. I have an idea for a fun and easy QAYG (quilt-as-you-go) quilt.<br />
<br />
This is what the first panel looks like. I joined the strips in a flip-n-stitch method, so this panel is already quilted.<br />

I am primarily self/internet taught. I have taken a few classes, but none have been as good as the QuiltCon workshop with <a href="http://kristawithersquilting.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Krista Withers</a>. As a matter of fact, her quilting won best machine quilting at QuiltCon.<div>
<br /></div>

<div>
I love that it is a mix of straight lines in multiple directions and some free-motion swirls mixed in with "ghost" shapes.</div>

<br />
Krista was down to earth and gave us practical strategies to layout out quilting designs.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghZFqSMs6NTAuwWu1DwdfYCufsS3UbByVRMrTesj9yQJcGF-GASRKM636ONvnSjCJLkoGRLu4Dgy9ELY9X4IGdZ00vi8ecjr8I7TM7eXER_SmhDbSTiBduOzLvRzMiw36qfq9mQ7327Rxd/s1600/IMG_20150221_160952764.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghZFqSMs6NTAuwWu1DwdfYCufsS3UbByVRMrTesj9yQJcGF-GASRKM636ONvnSjCJLkoGRLu4Dgy9ELY9X4IGdZ00vi8ecjr8I7TM7eXER_SmhDbSTiBduOzLvRzMiw36qfq9mQ7327Rxd/s1600/IMG_20150221_160952764.jpg" height="640" width="360" /></a></div>
She showed how you can make a "path" for fills and complete the rest with various straight line designs.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
She also taught us to use mylar or clear plexiglass to "test" are ideas before putting thread to quilt.</div>

Pictures can not come close to showing the beauty that each quilt exhibits in person. I have been to other quilt shows, but none come close to the energy that this show has. WELL DONE MQG!<br />

Here are some random photos from around the show.<br />

All of the teal flower centers are now quilted - lots and lots of pebbles. I also have all of the white flowers outlined.<br />

Maybe I will ride again someday. Now that I quilt, it has only been a matter of time before I incorporated them into a quilt. This is my "Galloping Through the Meadow Quilt".<br />

<br />
I found this large hoop (24" diameter) in my garage. It came with the house. It was just perfect to use it to mark my quilt with this 18" horse. <a href="http://colormequilty.blogspot.com/2012/04/try-new-things-tnt-thursday-quilt.html" target="_blank">Click here if you want to see my tutorial on this marking technique.</a><br />
<br />
<br />
Instead of using white tulle, I used black and a silver Sharpie. Once it's on the tulle, I used a chalk pencil to transfer it on the quilt.<br />

You would think I could finish one of my other quilts first, but NOOOO, I have to keep creating.<br />
<br />
It started because I want to do a demonstration to my quilt guild on a reverse applique' technique using freezer paper. It is an easy way to set in circles. It's the method I used in my Meadow Quilt.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQQlACETqbjqO6KgWnDYkrAeRlY4wiydSjSekSCUkrr_xwOLSJurnUI2oTZsgDt-myh0xgGoEcm-6r9Fxo6rkv9wnELE9eCeRKbpr-BYu1oGE_A7_h9Rrz2k47UeCzfMNCB6HfNXXttiGD/s1600/Galloping+thru+the+Meadow+004.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQQlACETqbjqO6KgWnDYkrAeRlY4wiydSjSekSCUkrr_xwOLSJurnUI2oTZsgDt-myh0xgGoEcm-6r9Fxo6rkv9wnELE9eCeRKbpr-BYu1oGE_A7_h9Rrz2k47UeCzfMNCB6HfNXXttiGD/s1600/Galloping+thru+the+Meadow+004.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I was thinking that this same technique should work with different shapes. So I thought I would give it a try.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjinG4xM8zyMWa9XC8MzIphyphenhyphen72MlqrCjComH6tHyJ4p6AJ2QvDuk0LJ24zgjCfoVp8XexOa1FSUDqn5L5pH-KsERoW4VRKLub8__53Dx0NN1QIcrXyDEDkdNIPl8aBatIS87KtESKFVLefi/s1600/fly+with+me+quilt+003.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjinG4xM8zyMWa9XC8MzIphyphenhyphen72MlqrCjComH6tHyJ4p6AJ2QvDuk0LJ24zgjCfoVp8XexOa1FSUDqn5L5pH-KsERoW4VRKLub8__53Dx0NN1QIcrXyDEDkdNIPl8aBatIS87KtESKFVLefi/s1600/fly+with+me+quilt+003.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
I decided to try it with a plane. seems to work well.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3VaSGFuigFTA_GdYafUtixZjNHuqujqZ_iqkj0XBKLBy-HN_tjhZqKgjp_S6k_Nm2FgCkektyLtdzzuM6oW84EKmQ33TB7xQYTbkUqdc1EtZ9BEH4uPQnYUBUfxsL7IN_QiryHsXXQPUg/s1600/fly+with+me+quilt+004.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3VaSGFuigFTA_GdYafUtixZjNHuqujqZ_iqkj0XBKLBy-HN_tjhZqKgjp_S6k_Nm2FgCkektyLtdzzuM6oW84EKmQ33TB7xQYTbkUqdc1EtZ9BEH4uPQnYUBUfxsL7IN_QiryHsXXQPUg/s1600/fly+with+me+quilt+004.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
Now all I have to do it remove the freezer paper and top stitch it down to the orange fabric.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWg7X1kOyD-W7RhyXYnVRI6Juap__h6fjU3hm0Fypnm4owAwOqMNSPIhwILHFdMEVRJuN2FnoEC3E0O5p4clxgfvz8axLh7djvo_6WpLNKXcsYKHTp5VxLGlU_QicOyprp8-HtXxixhefh/s1600/fly+with+me+quilt+006.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWg7X1kOyD-W7RhyXYnVRI6Juap__h6fjU3hm0Fypnm4owAwOqMNSPIhwILHFdMEVRJuN2FnoEC3E0O5p4clxgfvz8axLh7djvo_6WpLNKXcsYKHTp5VxLGlU_QicOyprp8-HtXxixhefh/s1600/fly+with+me+quilt+006.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
I think this will look really cool with this Alison Glass fabric.<br />
<br />Sew, needless to say, I started a new quilt. I guess I'm ready for take-off.<br />
<br />

Yippee! Especially since the second quilt top has been finished since last March - see the <a href="http://colormequilty.blogspot.com/2014/03/2014-pantone-quilt-challenge-radiant.html" target="_blank">Pantone quilt here</a>. Let's hope it doesn't take another year to get it quilted. I'm still not sure how I'm going to quilt this.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNAQiPxaqKZBzNjloRW7pEAfKjTy19XF81FsBdcEEnPL5brflBfgRZgr41-6rSaLbMIQzoz7EoDnog4sQeEZ-XsJFJU1hzeafzeqdUqDxZ4jmFD2EtR2J7o15pCkXHWUPRJO0k9aFqtyl-/s1600/pantone+quilt+basted+002.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNAQiPxaqKZBzNjloRW7pEAfKjTy19XF81FsBdcEEnPL5brflBfgRZgr41-6rSaLbMIQzoz7EoDnog4sQeEZ-XsJFJU1hzeafzeqdUqDxZ4jmFD2EtR2J7o15pCkXHWUPRJO0k9aFqtyl-/s1600/pantone+quilt+basted+002.JPG" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
The other quilt I got basted was my Meadows Quilt, which I'm really looking forward to quilting.<br />

<br />
I spray basted both quilts using 1"x3"x94" boards. <a href="http://colormequilty.blogspot.com/2013/04/spray-basting-using-boards.html" target="_blank">Click here to see my tutorial on how to spray baste with boards.</a><br />

Especially since my hubby has to go to work. I can get sew much done. I finished piecing the back for my Meadow quilt. Really happy with it.<br />

This is really a big quilt - queen sized. It is the largest quilt I've made so far. Well okay, I have made two queen sized quilts before, but they were done <a href="http://colormequilty.blogspot.com/2012/01/try-new-things-tnt-thursday-qayg_12.html" target="_blank">QAYG (quilt-as-you-go)</a>. This will be the largest I've quilted in one piece. It is so big I had to borrow longer boards and set two tables end to end (pushed all of my living room furniture over to fit the tables together) in order to baste it. I'm using Quilters Dream Wool, so I was able to spray baste. LOVE how soft this batting is. <br />

The boards I borrowed were from Quilters Corner (LQS), they are part of fancy basting frame. I just couldn't make the frame work, so I did it my way by wrapping the quilt on the boards (<a href="http://colormequilty.blogspot.com/2013/04/spray-basting-using-boards.html" target="_blank">Click here to see my tutorial on how to spray baste using boards</a>). Worked like a charm.<br />

I am a little concerned about free-motion quilting this quilt. With all of the curved piecing, I'm a bit afraid of puckers. This is another reason I choose spray basting and wool batting. I think spray basting holds the quilt together better with less shifting and the wool loft should help take up some of the slack. The other great thing about wool batting, it drapes so nicely. Can't wait to get this done and on this bed!<br />

I'm going to have to make over this room to compliment this quilt!<br />
