Try New Things (TNT) Thursday: 4 Times the Charm Gothic Pin Cushion

I've picked up a few charm packs because I just love the variety of prints, but, I seem to struggle with how best to use them. And recently, I don't know if it's me or what, but I've seen a lot of pin cushions showing up around the quilty blogisphere. I decided to put the two things together and create a Gothic (faux Catherdral Window) pin cushion with charms.

4 Charms (Mine are 6"x6", but 5"x5" work just fine for this)

This is the background fabric, cut into quarters (3"x3" or 2.5"x2.5" depending on the starting size of your charm)

The fabric that will be the "edge" of the window, trim to 1/2" smaller (5.5" or 4.5" square)

Fold in half, wrong sides together

Sandwich the background quarters on each end of the folded "edge" fabric the folded end of the "edge" fabric should be 1/4" from the edge of the outer fabric.

Stitch each end
Unfold. You have now basically created a double ended one seam flying geese.

Fold the square in half and stitch the back seam together

Voila! Now go press the block.

Cut the center of the window charm in quarters (you just need 1 of the quarters). Place in the center of the square and fold the "edge" fabric over the center fabric press, glue and press again. (You can pin instead of glue, but I find this so much easier)

Top stitch or hand stitch the folded fabric down
The top is complete!
Trim the back charm 1/2" in each direction (5.5" or 4.5" square). Right sides together, sew around the square leaving approx. 1.5" space so that you can turn it right sides out.

Stuff! You can use batting (I used wool batting scraps), ground walnut shells, bird gravel, saw dust - amazing what you will find if you Google it.

Stitch the opening closed, add pins! A Charming Gothic Pin Cushion.

  4. Very cute pincushion - I've thought of taking up patchworking and quilting... haven't done it yet though... So you pincushion might just be a really good starters point. :)

  5. I just made this! It was supper easy. You could easily put in a layer of batting instead of the filling and have a coaster.
