More or Less Quilting?

I think the hardest part to quilting a quilt is decide what motifs or how much to quilt/leave unquilted. My first reaction is always to quilt the snot out of it, but I'm not sure that is always the right thing to do. So I need your help!

I've added both sides on the quilt.

I've added some straight line quilting to mimic the sashing.

I used this bar to help guide the lines, but I still really hate doing straight lines, they are never very straight.

So the big question is, do I quilt in the big areas between the sashing lines?

What should I quilt? Something simple like stippling? A different "fill" in each area?
Anyway, I would love it if you would all give me some ideas. I would like to quilt both sides before I added the top and bottom border.

WIPing on the Layers

My stepdaughter's wedding was Saturday. It was absolutely lovely. But the big thing is, I didn't finish their wedding present yet. I'm still WIPping on my Layers quilt. One of the big problems, I didn't have enough batting or fabric to finish the borders. Monday was the first chance I got to go to Quilters Corner for the front fabric and batting. I had to order the Madrona Road text fabric, which should arrive today. With the batting, I had enough fabric to do the sides, so last night I got one side on.

Side border on and basted

Back side of the border
Adding borders QAYG is fairly easy. The hardest part is handling all of the fabric.

Sandwich the border fabric, right sides together

Top and back fabric, pin securely. Stitch together with a normal quarter inch seam.

Cut a piece of batting with a nice straight edge and butt in to the seam. Zigzag in to the seam allowance.
Once that's done, just flip the front and back fabric over the batting, baste and quilt as desired.

Fugly Fabric Giveaway - CLOSED!

I just have to take a break from a crazy wedding weekend (my stepdaughter is getting married) and join in the Fugly Fabric Party over at Charm About You. I was digging in my stash the other day and came across some of my mom's fabric. Some pretty fall fabrics that is so appropriate for this time of year, but not quite my taste. Hopefully, someone will fall in love with this bundle of over 6 yards of fabric.

Brown leaf fabric - approx. 3/4 yd
Gold squares fabric - approx. 1/2 yd
Pumpkin tonal fabric - approx. 1 yd +
Green leaf fabric - approx. 2 yds
Green tonal fabric - approx. 2 yds +

Straight from the fabric store, never washed (at least I don't think so). Okay, it was purchased quite a while back, but still nice fabric.

I will ship internationally. I've been listening to a lot of Pandora Radio lately, so leave me with a comment telling me your favorite song/artist and I will pick the winner based purely on a whim and song/artist that I like. If there is more the one of the same that I pick, I will let Random.org pick the winner on August 31st at 7:00 p.m. EDT. I'll announce the winner on Sunday morning September 1st. PLEASE make sure I have your email address, no email address = no entry!

I hope you all like my Fugly Fabric giveaway! I'm linking up with Lucy at Charm About You, go check out the rest of the giveaways!

WIP Wednesday

I'm moving along on my Layers quilt. Not quite as fast as I need to, but I am making progress. I got the first two rows together last night, still have to join the third row and the borders.

I'm using Quilters Dream Puff batting. My favorite because it adds so much dimension.
I put it on a queen sized bed to see how it's going to look. Obviously, I need to add about 14" - 15" border to make it fit. At least borders are easier to add then joining rows.

Blocks Into Rows

I've started joining the blocks of my Layers quilt. I've gone from nine blocks to three rows.
I'm using kind of a mushroomy taupe for the 3 inch sashing on the front
I think the back of the rows looks pretty cool too.
I'm using Madrona Road text fabric for the sashing on the back.
Click here, if you would like to see QAYG method I'm using to join the blocks.

Block Nine

Well, I'm finally finished quilting my Layers quilt blocks. I've even gotten them trimmed and I'm ready to start assemble using the wide strip method of QAYG. I think the blocks turned out pretty cool. Now the question is, will that coolness continue as I put it all together?

All nine blocks quilted with miles of Aurifil 50wt thread and  trimmed to 20" x 20" I'm planning about a 3 inch sashing
Well, how fast can I get this quilt together? Cross your fingers and wish me some speed (the wedding is Saturday).

Eight out of Nine Layers Blocks Done!

I'm starting to see the finish line, at least for quilting the nine blocks of my Layers quilt. I finished quilting block eight last night. Only one more block left.

Just need to quilt Block # 9
So the question is: Can I finish it, or at least come close to putting this all together by next Saturday. Did I mention I'm also hosting a cocktail party for the lucky couple on Friday night for about 45 people????  Why, oh, why do I wait to the last minute to finish projects????  I must like the pressure! ;)

Anyway, I'm linking up to day with Leah Day for FMQ Friday!

Half Done

I didn't get a ton of quilting done this weekend, they are always so chaotic in the summer.  The good thing is my three new spools of Aurifil arrived Saturday. I really am  addicted to this stuff, even my husband is now aware of that!

Three Spools of my drug of choice - Aurifil!
I now have reached the halfway point on quilting the blocks - four and a half done on my Layers quilt. Here's block four and five.

FMQ Friday

I got just a little more quilting done last night. Yesterday was quite busy, I had a lovely lunch at my Aunt's house with about twenty of my favorite cousins. Actually, I absolutely love all of my cousins and their families. I am extremely blessed to have such a fabulous and close knit family, we actually like each other.

Okay, okay, back to quilting. Here is my Layers quilt, so far.
