First Little Finish for 2013!

Okay, so it is just a little finish. But a finish is a finish and my Pond Pillow is complete!
The front of this pillow was December's Sew Cal Gal FMQ challenge. It will coordinate with my Koi Pond quilt, once that's done.

The back! I found this gilt FQ the other day and just loved the sparkle.

"Antique" mismatched buttons - my husband thinks I'm crazy for intentionally using different buttons, but I love it.
I did work on a few other projects this week. I continued to quilt my Koi Pond quilt.

I love my little fishies.
I also made this little baby quilt top from some old orphan blocks.

All in all it was a productive week.
Here are this weeks stats:
In-process: (2)
Elephant quilt
Koi Pond quilt -  continued FMQ

New projects: (1)
Orphan Baby Quilt. - make back and quilt

Finished (1)

A New Year of WIP Wednesdays

Nothing like a fresh new year for fresh new WIPs! What is it about me that I have to start a new project  before I finish all of my old projects? Now with that said, I really did finish many, many projects last year and have only one WIP from last year.

So here is a peek at my latest project, Koi Pond.
I'm planning on adding some koi embroidery to the center navy section. Here is a test run.
This is machine embroidery design by Embroidery Library. I was planning on putting 3 fish in the center. This test was done on a quilt sandwich and it stitched out pretty well, but the back was a bit messy. I'll have to work to see if I can get it to stitch out a little cleaner.
It worked great for a test, but I'm wondering how it will be when I have a big quilt hanging over the edge?

This gives you the idea of proportion, three Koi will  easily fit.

Most of the time the back of embroidery doesn't show, so I will have to work to get this looking good enough for the back of the quilt.

I also started a coordinating pillow, as my last project for Sew Cal Gal's 2012 FMQ Challenge.

So here are my stats:
In-process: (1)
Elephant quilt

New projects: (2)
Koi Pond quilt
Pond Pillow

Finished (3)
Purple heart wall hanging
Storybook quilt # 2

Sew Cal Gal FMQ Challenge for December

I have had so much fun this year with Sew Cal Gal's FMQ challenge. December is no exception. Patsy Thompson gave a great tutorial on borders and feathers. As a matter of fact, it was all those borders that were the inspiration for my latest quilt, Koi Pond. I didn't have time to quilt that quilt, so I decided to make a coordinating pillow to use as my assignment this month.

I really love the bright colors and the stitching just seems to set it all off. I've done feathers before, but never like these. I love how they fill the whole border. I used three different threads. Orange Isacord for the center, a varigated green King Tut for the spirals and feathers and a orangy-red polyester for the outer border.

The fabric on the back isn't really pretty. It was just some fabric I had in my stash, since it will be on the inside of the pillow. Thank you Patsy Thompson for a great tutorial.
