Blogger's Quilt Festival, Spring 2014 (Modern)

 A Modern Quilt!

I actually made this quilt last year as part of the Art Glass Gallery Challenge with an Angela Walters panel from her Textures line of fabric. The quilt didn't really have a known destination or reason for being except for completing the challenge. So I gave it to my husband, because there were no flowers or swirls and he liked the colors. So it sits folded over the back of a chair in my living room, unless it's chilly, then my husband wraps up in it.

This past Christmas we had new family members join are Christmas Eve party; my new son-in-law's mom, dad and sister. They fell in love with this quilt. They never realized that quilts could be modern and fun and fit in with today's styles.

Just recently, I received the nicest note from my son-in-law's mom asking I would consider making this quilt again for her daughter for Christmas, offering to pay for it. She knows that I have a rule that I don't sell my quilts. It's hard to ask what they are really worth; fabric, thread, batting and time!

It takes quite a bit of time to quilt a quilt like this.
Aurifil Thread 50wt used on the quilt. Quilted with a domestic machine; Pfaff Quilters Expression 4.0

This is the back of the quilt, I used the same color in both the top and the bobbin.

Faux Piped Binding (check out the tutorial here)

My husband has been generous and said that "we" could give her this quilt for Christmas and I could make him a new quilt. That's probably what I'm going to do. It has been quite an ego boost to have a young 30 something professional (my son-in-law's sister) really want one of my quilts.

The quilt is 54" x 63", Art Glass Gallery fabrics (Textures by Angela Walters), Quilters Dream Puff batting and lots and lots of Aurifil 50wt thread. The design is my own.

Stratified Layers of Life and Love

It took me a month to quilt the blocks and join them with the sashing. It took another month to add the borders and quilt them. But all in all, I think the final product was worth the time.

I literally went through miles of Aurifil thread. I really love this thread. It's thin, but strong and goes through my machine wonderfully. I love that I can change the end of the spool so that the thread can come off it the other direction.
There is new spool of off-white thread on the right side is because the first spool is completely use. I think if I had used just one color I would have gone through four or more spools. I think my husband has figured out that I horde Aurifil thread more than fabric. Although he's not complaining too much, this is his favorite quilt to date.

I spent a lot of time going through lots and lots of Leah Day's FMQ fills. It was a blast using so many of them.

The quilt is a generous queen size and I used Quilters Dream Puff batting. It was constructed using QAYG (quilt-as-you-go) methods and faux piped binding. You can see tutorials for these techniques on my tutorial page.

My Last WIP for Layers

This will be the last week that my Layers quilt is on my WIP list!!!!!  I am so close to finishing this monster sized quilt. It's trimmed and the binding is made. I just have to sew the binding on and down.

I think I made a good choice to do a scrappy binding with faux piping in navy. I'm not looking forward to trying to sew this on to the large queen sized quilt, but when it's done, so is the quilt. Yahoo!

Here are this week's stats:
In-process: (4)
Express Your Love
Layers quilt
Grandma's Quilt
Charming Squares Quilt

WIPping On Some Binding

Oh yes, it's WIP Wednesday and I'm still working on my Layers quilt. At least this week I'm done with the quilting and working on the binding. I'm planning on a Faux Piped Binding with scrappy orange outer binding and navy piping.

Miles of binding to make!

Make It Right - Color Me Textured

I did it! I finished by Make It Right Challenge quilt at 10:30 p.m. last night, which was an hour and a half before the deadline. I decided to name my quilt Color Me Textured. I'm quite pleased with the results.

I used "Faux Piped Binding". Check out my tutorial, if you're interested.

Of course I used Aurifil Thread. Just love this stuff!
Besides using every bit of the Right Angles panel, I used Pure Elements Lemonade, Linen White and Moonstone.

I used Quilters Dream Puff batting and my method for pin basting using 1"x3" boards
The quilt ended up to be 54" x 63", with lots and lots of texture.

I'm planning on giving this quilt to my husband for his birthday on Sunday. I hope he'll enjoy it on cold winter nights watching TV.

I'm linking up today with Richard and Tanya Quilts for Finish Friday, Quokka Quilts for TGIFF and The Free-Motion Quilting Project for FMQ Friday. Of course I entered my quilt into the challenge and I'm shamelessly asking for your "Pins", once they have it posted. Click here to check out all of the quilts.

Which Fabric Do You Like?

Choosing a binding can sometimes be a bit of a dilemma for me. Fabric seems to change when you only see a small portion of it in the binding. I love using stripes for bindings, but you can't always find just the right one. Well, I'm almost to the point of needing to choose a binding for my Expanding Possibilities quilt.  So, which fabric do you like?

A wide range of choices

These two seem to be my favorite, but I'm open to changing my mind

The back of the quilt.
I know that there are no right or wrong answers, but sometimes when your stuck it helps to hear what others think. So let me know what you think. What about a faux piped binding, which colors should I combine? I'm hoping to finish up this quilt before Thanksgiving, YIKES that's next week!!!!

I'm linking up with Leah Day at the Free Motion Quilting Project for UFO Sunday! I wonder what everyone else is working on today?

Sea Glass Quilt (QAYGFMQQAL) Finished!

I really love how this quilt turned out. And I love how much I learned from making this quilt.
The quilt is approx. 50" x 60"
I started this quilt in January as part of Quokka Quilts QAYGFMQQAL (quilt as you go, free motion quilting, quilt-a-long). Each week we would get a new set of designs to quilt, each block is FMQ differently, then joined together after it is quilted.
The entire quilt, both piecing and FMQ is done with 50 wt Aurifil thread. I struggled a little bit at the beginning with breaking thread, but Alex Veronelli from Aurifil was so wonderful to help me troubleshoot the problem. It turned out that the batting I was using (Warm and Natural) has a needle punched scrim and there is a top and bottom to the batting. As soon as I put the batting in the sandwich correctly, the thread worked beautifully!

Back of the quilt.

I love the texture of the quilting on the back.
I also tried a new technique for the binding, faux piping.
I was planning on donating this quilt, but a certain family member has admired this quilt from the beginning and today is her birthday. I think she deserves this quilt!

Today, I'm linking up with TGIFF over at Blossom Heart Quilts. This quilt is also on my Finish-A-Long list with Quilter in the Gap.
