When I was a little girl, I dreamed of horses. I still love horses. So when my quilt guild had a "blox made modern" challenge" I thought I would incorporate some of that lovely Cotton and Steele Mustang fabric. This is for every little girl who has "Stars in Your Eyes" every time they see horses.
The challenge was to take a traditional block and make it modern. So I took an Ohio Star block and made it modern.
It is modern because:
1. Scale: this block is 24"x 45"
2. Wonky/Improv: the center is not square, the star points don't match
3. Lots of negative space with solid fabric
I plan to back it and quilt it, leaving it this size for a nice wall hanging.
Today I'll link up with Freemotion by the River for Linky Tuesday

And the Plaid Begins
I love the look of straight line quilting, but I really don't like to do it. My lines are never straight, no matter what I do. It's probably of function of practice, I'd rather FMQ! But plaid quilting requires straight lines. Hopefully the baby that this quilt is intended for won't notice!
The quilting is going quickly, hopefully I will finish it this week.

I also hosted the combined Ithaca and Rochester Modern Quilt Guild picnic on Sunday. What absolutely wonderful women, love them all. Here's a peek at some of there work.

The Ithaca group is having a swap fabric and make a block for your partner challenge. Most of us swapped fabric with 5 or 6 people. I gave each of my partners a color of the rainbow. I got my yellow and orange blocks back. I LOVE them.
I'm linking up with Freshly Pieced for WIP Wednesday!
Here are this week's stats:

WhIPped into Shape
Summer is always a busy time of year, especially if you live on a lake. All picnics are here. I have four of them in the next week. Sunday is my quilt guild picnic, so you know I have to get my sewing room in order. ;)
So I spent some time this week organizing my scraps.
As you can see in the picture of my sewing room, I also had time to get my Modern Scottish baby quilt basted.
I love the backing for this quilt, which by the way was found in my stash! It was EXACTLY the right size, not an inch to spare!
Even though there is no official WIP Wednesday, this is the best way I know to keep track of my projects.

WIP Wednesday
I haven't written a WIP Wednesday post in a couple of weeks, so it will be interesting to see my progress on my list of projects.
I finished my MQG/Michael Miller Fabric Challenge quilt, quite pleased with the result. You can see and read more about this quilt here.
I also started a new project, my Modern Scottish Baby quilt. You can see and read more about it here.
One of my favorite quilt shops (Quilters Corner) had a wonderful sale recently and I finally picked out some backing fabric for my Pantone Quilt 2014. You can see and read more about it here.
At my guild meeting on Sunday, we started a block exchange. Everyone created five bags of scraps, totaling at least to a fat quarter for someone else to make a block for them. We then exchanged bags. Here's the fabric from several of my fellow guild members.

The Cancer Resource Center Quilt
Well, my part is complete! I think it turned out nice.
Each block was created, pieced and quilted by members of the Ithaca Modern Quilt Guild. I joined the blocks with QAYG methods. The theme was the emotions around cancer. The quilt is for the benefit show at the Hangar Theater to be raffled off and proceeds to go the the Cancer Resource Center of the Finger Lakes. The dimensions are approximately 65" x 62". I think that even the back looks great.

A Special Project
As some of you may know, I'm a member of the Ithaca Modern Quilt Guild. We are working on a very special quilt for the Cancer Resource Center of the Finger Lakes to be raffled off at a benefit show at the Hangar Theater on April 19th. Yikes, that's less than two weeks away. Guild members each made a quilted block that will be joined by a QAYG method. Oh yeah, and they asked me to join the blocks together. How can I say no to this fabulous group, for such a good cause?
Some blocks still need to be trimmed and I'm waiting to add one more block. So this may not be the final layout. I should have the last block tomorrow and I'll determine the final layout and start joining the blocks.
Some of the stories behind these blocks are amazing, I really need to make sure we document them.

Can You See the Forest for the Trees?
You guessed it, I'm quilting more trees today! I'm really liking how this Tree quilt is turning out. Only six more trees to quilt.
I like how this thread, Aurifil 5004, looks like pencil sketches. I'm planning on using this same thread for the whole quilt. Better order some more today! Who needs to hoard fabric, I much prefer to hoard Aurifil!
In other news, just look what came in the mail yesterday??? The Modern Quilt Guild Michael Miller fabric challenge. Yikes, I have to cut all this up in to fat eighths? Maybe someone in the IMQG will take pitty on me and offer some help!
I'm linking up today with Free Motion by the River for Linky Tuesday and A Quilt Story for Fabric Tuesday.

FMQ Samples
For the January meeting of the Ithaca Modern Quilt Guild, I showed the group a few methods of how to do Quilt-As-You-Go (QAYG). It was lots of fun and I created this sample.
Now the Rochester Modern Quilt Guild has asked me to do the same demo for them. Why did I have to finish up this piece? So I needed a whole new set of samples to join together.
What a great excuse to FMQ!!! It should be fun to decide how to join these.

Reverse Applique'
I've seen several examples online and locally of reverse applique'. I've always wanted to try it, so when my guild set out to construct a quilt to be donated to benefit The Cancer Resource Center of the Finger Lakes, I decided this was the time to try it out - small scale.
Since the quilt is going to be raffled off at a special benefit show at the Hangar Theatre, I thought it may be appropriate to use theater masks in the block.
The reverse applique' was really quite easy. I traced my image on to the red fabric, then put the grey fabric under it and stitched the pattern. Then very carefully it cut away the top (red) fabric (seriously the most stressful part of the block). Presto!
Cancer leads to so many emotions, fluctuating between hope and despair. I'm really looking forward to seeing how this quilt comes together. Check out IMQG's blog for more of the blocks.

FMQ Samples
I'm putting together a little QAYG (quilt-as-you-go) demonstration for my quilt guild (IMQG) today and it required some FMQ samples to join. I had a lot of fun with these.
After the demonstration, I plan to use these to make a new bed for my dog, Humphrey.
