Blogger's Quilt Festival, Spring 2014 (Modern)

 A Modern Quilt!

I actually made this quilt last year as part of the Art Glass Gallery Challenge with an Angela Walters panel from her Textures line of fabric. The quilt didn't really have a known destination or reason for being except for completing the challenge. So I gave it to my husband, because there were no flowers or swirls and he liked the colors. So it sits folded over the back of a chair in my living room, unless it's chilly, then my husband wraps up in it.

This past Christmas we had new family members join are Christmas Eve party; my new son-in-law's mom, dad and sister. They fell in love with this quilt. They never realized that quilts could be modern and fun and fit in with today's styles.

Just recently, I received the nicest note from my son-in-law's mom asking I would consider making this quilt again for her daughter for Christmas, offering to pay for it. She knows that I have a rule that I don't sell my quilts. It's hard to ask what they are really worth; fabric, thread, batting and time!

It takes quite a bit of time to quilt a quilt like this.
Aurifil Thread 50wt used on the quilt. Quilted with a domestic machine; Pfaff Quilters Expression 4.0

This is the back of the quilt, I used the same color in both the top and the bobbin.

Faux Piped Binding (check out the tutorial here)

My husband has been generous and said that "we" could give her this quilt for Christmas and I could make him a new quilt. That's probably what I'm going to do. It has been quite an ego boost to have a young 30 something professional (my son-in-law's sister) really want one of my quilts.

The quilt is 54" x 63", Art Glass Gallery fabrics (Textures by Angela Walters), Quilters Dream Puff batting and lots and lots of Aurifil 50wt thread. The design is my own.

I'm linking up with Amy's Creative Side for the Blogger's Quilt Festival Spring 2014: Modern Quilts

Color Me Quilty!

  1. You did a fabulous job with your color selections and your quilting! Isn't it wonderful to know your work is appreciated and genuinely loved, far beyond the obligatory compliment when someone visits!

  2. High praise, how cool is that ?~! I love the design, you did great with all the different styles. And hello, Quilting Genius, the quilting is beyond words Fantastic !~! I love each part of this quilt, thanks for sharing it with us. I know the new owner will be so excited, too.

  3. Such wonderful quilting on this!! Looks great and nothing helps the ego more than someone wanting one of your quilts as their own :)

  4. It's a great quilt Pat and the 'modern' quilting is wonderful and really set's off the top and fabric! But I agree, it's very hard to put a value to quilts because it's your valuable time as well as the materials that make it so special! That was really nice of your husband to offer to give them the quilt. Of course he does have a direct line to the artist so there's a good chance his generosity will be rewarded?! cheers, Claire W.

  5. Great layout and awesome quilting! Wow!

  6. Dropping by from BQF, great colours, not surprised you got quilt converts on your hands :D

  7. I am a fan of modern quilts and a great fan of FMQ so it is wonderful to see both combined here. I particularly like the FMQ on the grey fabric. Lime green, turquoise and grey is such a fabulous colour scheme. Great quilt and impressive to FMQ in that size on a DSM.

  8. How awesome that you found someone else who loves your quilt do much! I think you're right - there are a lot of people out there who don't realize that quilts can be modern and fun and fresh! I'm pretty sure that when I tell people I'm a quilter, they immediately get an image in their head of a stuffy, ninety year old lady's living room. (No offense to the ninety year old ladies out there...) I'm in my twenties, so they usually don't know how to respond to that. ;).
Your quilting is gorgeous, by the way. And I love the section in the middle ish with the boxes cut in half.

  9. Eye catching and fabulous quilting! Great work!
