Aurifil Thread and Quilters Dream Puff batting |
I have been free motion quilting for less than two years. And I'd like to think that I'm getting proficient at it, but I'm ready to push my skills a little more this year. I think that means looking at different batting and quilting with thread that highlights the quilting by blending into the fabric. I tend to quilt with contrasting thread, really a lot easier to see where I've been. But I want texture for one of my next quilts. So I tried out a new batting that I heard about at my last guild meeting, Quilters Dream Puff.

This batting is fairly thin for polyester, but very soft and light weight. |

I like the combination of Dream Puff batting and Aurifil thread. |

It was fun quilting up this little doodle. I think this combination is going to work great on my Elephant quilt. The only problem is I have to get the quilt together so I can get to the fun part - FMQ!
I'm linking up the Leah Day at the
Free Motion Quilting Project for FMQ Fridays.

WOW! I would have thought that was a computer driven quilting run. Great job!
ReplyDeleteVery nice. I just finished my first quilt with Quilters Dream Request cotton batting. Love it. My needle went through it like it was going through butter. They make a nice product. Not the cheapest though.
ReplyDeleteIts beautiful, I also like the textured look when using the same colour thread as the fabric, makes the design 'pop...
ReplyDeleteFabulous FMQ!
ReplyDeleteI am new to Leah Days Free Motion Quilting Friday. Love the quilting.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful motif, and I think the combination of fabric thread and THAT batting is going to give you a lot of loft and an almost trapunto look.
ReplyDeleteYOur sample looks wonderful! Looks like this new combo of thread and bat is a keeper.
ReplyDeleteHave a great day.
Always, Queenie
I've never tried FMQ with such a thick batting. Typically, if I want a trapunto effect, I will FMQ one layer of bat to where I want the additional thickness, then cut away around the object. Then I add the batting and backing and do the additional FMQ, making sure to just outline the object I want extra puffy. It adds an interesting dimension to have a thicker bat like this, though... I might have to try it. Nice work on your motif as well!
ReplyDeleteYour quilting looks awesome! I love combining panels is quilt the piecing goes really fast.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see your elephant quilt.
I love your doodle! And you are right, the quilting IS the fun part in my opinion :-)
ReplyDeletelove your doodling. I got some of that batting to try in trapunto though I haven't done it yet.
ReplyDeleteHow do you get your poly to stay put - basting - while you are quilting? How would handle quilting this beautiful design on a mongo king size quilt on a domestic machine?
ReplyDeleteThanks
Pat, I LOVE your "little doodle." The thread/fabric/batting combination looks great! I'm hoping to try out the quilters dream wool that my LQS recommended sometime soon :)
ReplyDeleteSuch a treat to watch your progress with FMQ!
Wow, your doodle is very impressive. It will make a beautiful motif on your quilt.
ReplyDeleteThis really looks fabulous! I can't believe how much there is to learn... ♥
ReplyDeleteFabulous! Love your doodle style. Thanks for the tip on Quilter's Dream puff...I will check it out. I love using Quilter's Dream Batting, but flat it is. so this might be something to have on hand for special needs.
