Joining In the "Mod Olives" Quilt-A-Long

Jenny at Sew Kind of Wonderful is having a Quilt-A-Long (QAL), using her Quick Curve Ruler. I joined one of her QAL a couple of years ago and made my Urban Nine Patch baby quilt that I just love. So, I think it's time to join in again.

Last night I went into my stash to look for fabric combinations. What do you think of this?

I've ordered some Kona "Coal" for the background, this was the darkest grey I had in my stash. I think "Coal" will be darker but a bit warmer. I also think I'd like to get a little more "Text" fabric for the centers of the block. I'm pretty excited about this project, I haven't done a QAL in a while. Yippee, Skippee!!!

Blogger's Quilt Festival Fall 2012

I love the Blogger's Quilt Festival at Amy's Creative Side because I LOVE looking through all of the quilts. So I just have to join in. I finished this quilt in July and it's currently my favorite!

Urban Nine Patch baby quilt

 I quilted this on my domestic machine. I tried keeping the quilting modern and fresh. This was my first all solids quilt (except the backing). I will be using solids a lot more in the future.

The Urban Nine Patch pattern uses the Quick Curve Ruler both from Jenny Pedigo at Sew Kind of Wonderful.

I really love this quilt pattern by Jenny Pedigo at Sew Kind of Wonderful. Her Quick Curve Ruler and tutorials for sewing curves are fabulous. The quilt is approximately 40" x 40", my first all solids and curved pieced quilt. Teals and lime greens are one of my favorite color combinations, but I really wanted a punch of color and I think the orange just kind of made this quilt.

WIP & QAL Wednesday!

I've been "re"-listening to the Harry Potter series as I sew. I closely associate myself with Hermione. I can't stand not getting my homework done, I had to at least give it a try. As I explained in yesterday's post, I'm sewing on my backup machine without a foot petal, just the start/stop button. Now, I've FMQ before with just the start/stop, it does give you a nice consistent speed, but my results are still really ugly.

The full view - my machine kept telling me my top thread was broken - it wasn't. ARGH! It's going in for a cleaning when I get Miss Ellie back!

I really like this design (Leah's version, not mine), I just don't like stitching it on my backup machine.

So my question for Leah today has to do with feet and pressure: On this little machine, I have a typical generic FMQ foot.

When I FMQ with my machine, the fabric doesn't glide under the foot, (I am using a supreme slider). The foot seems to hold the fabric down for a second, making my quilting choppy. It seems to me, I remember reading about how you did something with the spring and/or little bar at the top of the foot. Would fixing the foot help with this problem or is it a pressure setting on my machine?

On to other projects, I finished my Urban Nine Patch baby quilt. My first all solids quilt and my first curved piece quilt using my Quick Curve Ruler. I added a border of curved pieces, so that the circles were completed.

I tried pressing the seams open, that's different. I think I will have to work on getting used to doing that (an old dog issue).

Pieces Into Parts

I hope everyone had a great weekend! It was 91 degrees F yesterday, so it really feels like summer. Yesterday, I also found out that my Storybook Quilt made it into the top nominated FAVORITE BED QUILTS for the Spring 2012 Bloggers' Quilt Festival.

Since this was a long weekend for me, I decided that I really needed to get going on my Urban Nine Patch that I started way back in January or February. So this weekend I cut pieces and turned them into parts. I know really exciting stuff!

I still have to trim the parts and sew them into the blocks, then sew the blocks into a quilt top. I am quite pleased with the design and colors. This was made with Jenny at Sew Kind of Wonderful's Quick Curve Ruler (which in some kind of wonderful) and her Urban Nine Patch pattern. I can't wait to get this together so I can quilt it (my favorite part of quilting).

TGIFF - Thank Goodness It's Finish Friday!!!

Woohoo, I'm hosting TGIFF this week! How cool is that??!! And I even have some finishes - I love it when I plan comes together.




Sometimes I pick projects that push me out of my comfort zone and this one has me "goin' fribbon egg-shaped". I loved that saying. A gentleman I worked with years ago, used to use that phrase when his machine was running a little wonky (I was the quality manager and he didn't like to swear). Sew when I made up this block for the QuiltCon block challenge, I thought Goin' Fribbon Egg-Shaped was the perfect name. What do you think?

Most of the block was done improv style, but I did use my Quick Curve Ruler for the "egg-shapes". Is it too much grey? Does it need something more?

Watchout: Curves Ahead!

I love curves in quilts, I just don't have much experience with sewing curves. But Jenny at Sew Kind of Wonderful keeps posting just the coolest blocks using her quick curve ruler. She even started the Urban Nine Patch QAL, I had to join. I'm new to sewing curves and this block is far from perfect, but I really love it.

My rotating cutting mat (another Christmas present) came in handy for squaring up part of this block.

A couple of the points of my nine patch aren't perfect, but I really love this block. I think the orange gives it just the right "Pop"!

Quick Curve Meets Nine Patch: Urban Nine Patch

This past Thursday I pulled out my new Quick Curve Ruler that I got for Christmas and started playing with the curves.

That same day, Jenny from Sew Kind of Wonderful (inventor of the ruler) came up with this really cool block.

Jenny is starting a Quilt Along next Thursday. I already have a million projects started, but how in the world can I say no??? I am going to kill two birds with one stone though, I'm going to use this as my FLMQG (Finger Lakes Modern Quilt Guild) solids challenge quilt,which IS on my Big Fat Winter Stitching List!

Try New Things (TNT) Thursday: Quick Curve Ruler Experiment

Ever since I saw this quilt, I knew I wanted to make a similar one. Jenny from Sew Kind of Wonderful not only created this quilt, but also designed the Quick Curve Ruler to make it. She started selling the rulers right before Christmas and my brother and SIL were kind enough to give it to me as my Christmas present. So today is high time I take it for a spin!

The ruler has markings to keep things lined up

You can just flip the ruler to cut the other direction.

Pieces cut ready to sew.

There should be a 1/4" point at the top (and bottom)

No pins. I was shocked how easy this went together

1/4" point at the bottom of the seam

OOPS! A little operator error. Obviously I didn't put right sides together!

Press towards the curve.

Voila! Really cool block!
