Does Shopping Count as WIP Work???

Well, I think it does! I went shopping for the back, binding and batting for my recently found treasure, a quilt top made by my grandmother in the 1940's or 50's.

I found two LQS having sales, that takes some work, right??? The backing and the binding, found in two different shops, both on sale.

Of course, one of the shops was having their 10 year Anniversary sale, 25% off everything in the store. You really couldn't expect me to walk out without a little something for my stash, did you?

I'm a total sucker for solids, but I also couldn't help that sweet little typewriter print either.

I did get some quilting done this week, besides just shopping. I finished quilting the navy panel and worked on the elephant panel for my Elephant quilt. I still have some work to do on the elephant panel. Then I need to baste the last panel and quilt it before I can start assembly. I think I can get it done this month. That's the goal at least.








I completed a block for my guild "Art Grid" project. The Ithaca Modern Quilt Guild quilt is starting to look fabulous. I just LOVE how it is turning out.

It was a dark and Starry Night

My quilt guild started an Art Grid Quilt project during our last meeting. We got a poster of a famous painting, van Gogh's Starry Night and cut it into 24 pieces. Each member (that wanted one) got a piece to recreate in fabric. There were just a few rules, the block had to be 9.5"x9.5" (9" with 1/4" seam allowance) and it had to keep to the colors in the piece you received.  My piece was part of the black tree, yikes!

I suppose I could have done applique or paper piecing, but painting the block, of a famous painting, just seemed like the right thing to do. I used Lumiere fabric paint, a favorite of mine. You can see two other quilty projects I did here and here.

The rest of this week was spent basting and quilting one panel of my Elephant quilt.

Wednesday Roundup!

Let me start be saying, I LOVE quilt painting. So when I saw that Leah's homework this week was painting, I was all in! I haven't done a lot of quilt painting, but what I have done is so fun.

I have a bit of an amateur background in watercolor painting. This is a bit different, but still lots of fun. I just own a starter pack of this paint, so I just have a smattering of colors. What I found difficult was mixing paints (while on the palette)  to get different colors. I found I could paint over colors to get different colors, notice the centers of the flowers and then interior of the petals, I layered colors. So my question for Leah, do you buy each color you want or is there a way to mix them?

Quilty Embellishment Day for August

Wow, the summer seems to be flying by. Time again for Quilty Embellishment Day. What is that you ask???

First of all what is Quilty = quilts (big or small), fabric purses, totes, pouches...pretty much stuff you make with fabric as a base!

Second, what is Embellishment = anything that adds design interest to the piece. Examples (this is just a short list I could think of, but I know there are many more...)

Applique (raw edge or edge turned)

Embroidery (machine or hand)

Quilting (FMQ, machine, or hand)

Painting or dyeing

Trim, Lace,Beads, Fringe, Sequins, Buttons, Buckles, Zippers

Imagination!

etc., etc., etc!

Running with Scissors

I feel like that has been my life the last couple of weeks. Hosting three picnics in one week, starting the Ithaca Modern Quilt Guild, then a quick trip to Levittown, NY for work (6 hour drive), PHEW. You might think that I didn't quilt, but I DID! I completed two projects and at least started my homework this week.

My homework for Leah Day's QAL was stitching cucumber vine.

I have to say, I love cucumber vine. I didn't have a chance to stitch much, but what I did, was lots of fun. I will be using that design again. (No questions for Leah this week, just too busy to think! )

Finally took the time to bind this little painted quilt.

Added this cool faux piped binding to finish my QAYGFMQQAL - Sea Glass quilt. I'll be doing a tutorial on how to do this cool binding on Thursday.

Fresh Sewing Day July!

Happy Summer! I love summer, but it really pulls me away from my machine. So many family picnics and time at the beach. I've even learned to make homemade ice cream, yum! But that's not why you visit my blog, you want to know if I've done any sewing this month.

Only four projects this month, dominated by working on my Urban Nine Patch quilt.

Quilty Embellishment Day for June!

I love a party, I love seeing all the different, cool, quilty embellishments when folk link-up!

Since I've gotten so many comments on my little quilt painted sample I did a while back, I thought maybe you would like to see a little tutorial. I almost feel guilty calling this a tutorial, because it's so easy, but if nothing else, maybe this will give you the courage to try this out!

What you need to get started! Quilt (sample), Lumiere (fabric) paint, paint brushes, paper plate to use as a palette, water to clean your brushes and paper towel to dry off your brushes. (I bought these paints on Amazon, you may find them in art stores)

I had three brushes to use, but for this project I only used the top brush.

Squirt just a little paint out on the plate. Not too much, because it will dry somewhat quickly. Load your brush with a fair amount of paint.

Apply is right to the quilt! The paint is opaque (can't see through it), so just spread it on. This paint will work equally as well on dark fabric.

Just keep filling in the quilted areas you want painted. You can mix and shade as you like. The surface does stay wet for a bit and you can paint over it wet or dry for the results you want. Experiment and have some fun! You can always paint over it.

You can see, I add paint to the palette as I go, so the paint does dry out too fast.

Before you know it, you have a painted quilt that just shines!

You really can shade areas. The paint really is wonderfully easy to use.

Try New Things (TNT) Thursday: Quilt Painting!

The other day, while out browsing some of my favorite blogs, Laura at Quokka Quilts was showing her project from a two day workshop she attended with Helen Godden. I couldn't take my eyes off of her project. I then went in search of Helen Godden, who just happens to be a very talented quilt artist. After a little more stalking searching I found out that she was using Lumiere paints by Jaquard. I couldn't find them locally, so I ordered this little starter pack. Come to find out Leah Day used these paints on her quilt "Hot Cast".

I received these paints in the mail the other day, but I needed a quilt to try them out on. I knew I had to quilt a sample for the Sew Cal Gal March FMQ Challenge, so I decided to combine the projects.

These pictures really don't do this little piece justice, the quilt quite literally shimmers in the light. I used the paints without any mixing, applied by a small paint brush. They covered amazingly well. Painting was my first love, so the thought that I can combine the two, makes me a happy girl. I have a feeling that I will need a little more that just the starter pack of paint.
