WIP and QAL Wednesday: Practice

It is very hard to stay inside and sew when my gardens are calling me, but I was able to work on one quilting project this week. I was a little stumped as to what to use for Leah Day's homework, but my mom's UFO came to the rescue. There were some issues with the construction of the piece, which is probably why my mom never finished it. But with some of the stuff that Leah has taught us over the last 15 weeks, I think the piece is turning out nicely.

I added the last border, so that I would have something to hang on to while I quilted it. I also starched it and pressed it from the opposite side. I also used high loft poly batting to help with the puckers in the piece. All of these things I've learned from Leah! (Note to Leah: I really want you to know how much I appreciate you generosity in teaching us how to quilt. I have learned so much from you already! Thank you very, very much!!!!)

I started free motion quilting by stitching in the ditch around all of the borders and flowers.

I stitched kind of scribbley lines in the flowers, trying to make them look somewhat real (not sure I succeeded) and in the center of the flower I stitched some lines of stippling.

Around the first border I stitched big "U" shapes.
In the background, behind the flowers I did some microstippling.

I haven't stitched the last two borders. Maybe Leah's homework this week will give me something to stitch there!

So my question for Leah this week: Free Motion Feet
This is my free motion foot. I really like this foot, it gives me lots of visibility. But this week I kept getting snagged on the hand applique, one side of the foot would slip under part of the applique. Would a closed foot help with this type of project? Or is there something I should do that would avoid this issue?

So on to my other projects this week! Nada!
 My stats this week are:
In-process: (9)
FLMQG solids challenge crib quilt (2 out of 9 Urban Nine Patch blocks done)
Purple heart wall hanging ( needs borders, backing, quilting and binding)
Expanding Possibilities quilt (basted, now to be quilted)
Storybook quilt # 1 -   quilt the border and bind it
Storybook quilt # 2 - All embroidery is done
Quokka Quilts QAYGFMQQAL quilt (18 blocks out of 30 quilted)

  6. That little quilty is soooo great! I agree, Leah is amazing and is a wealth of info. I go over and over her tutorials. I will be watching to see what you do in the borders. I find them challenging.....all that space. Especially on a wide 6" border. I never know what to quilt.

Spring is a fun time of dividing time between quilting and gardening eh! It is awesome to finally see a few things blooming, here.

  7. Pat- I LOVE what you've done with the quilting of your mom's quilt. How fun!! It looks great and I'm thoroughly impressed you did more micro-stippling. I'm trying to get my latest quilts together to I can practice some more as well.

  18. I think the fmq on the flowers is beautiful! And, the colors are so soft. I love it.

Talking about fmq feet-I have a spring action foot that I cant use because it is sooooooooooo noisy; drives me crazy. I feel like it is always hitting something. I don't know. And, it doesn't really ever touch the surface of my quilt.
