WIP and QAL Wednesday: Microstippling

Well, I was a little slack and sorry this week. And, although my homework isn't quite done, I think there is enough to show.

My microstippling did change size over time. Inside the hearts, I stippled last week.
Stippling/microstippling is a design pattern that I struggle with keeping it smooth. I tend to get sharp little points sometimes. But I really can see how dog-gone useful this stitch is and how little the actual stitch shows up from any kind of distance!

So my question to Leah this week is: Is there any other quilting design/stitch that can be used in place of microstippling? When I say that I mean a stitch that just kind of blends into the background and lets the rest of the quilt shine?

On to the rest of my projects this week:

I was able to get the QAYG borders onto my Storybook quilt this week. I am so close to finishing this quilt, it really needs to be done! I just have to quilt the borders and bind it. I am really pleased with how well the QAYG method is working on this big (twin size) quilt.

Storybook quilt # 1
I also had a little fun with my Sew Cal Gal March Challenge sample, I painted it with Lumiere paints.
I will definitely be doing this again! I'm going to just bind it and hang it as a little mini-quilt.

My stats this week are:
In-process: (11)
FLMQG solids challenge crib quilt (2 out of 9 Urban Nine Patch blocks done)
Purple heart wall hanging ( needs borders, backing, quilting and binding)
Expanding Possibilities quilt (basted, now to be quilted)
Storybook quilt # 1 -   quilt the border and bind it
Storybook quilt # 2 - All embroidery is done
Quokka Quilts QAYGFMQQAL quilt (18 blocks out of 30 quilted)
Sewing Machine Cover - FMQ complete, need binding and ties
Geneva Public Library quilt - join and quilt (maybe make a block or two to even it out)
iPad case (embroidered and started piecing and quilting)

  1. Your FMQ qal is looking fantastic! I have that one on my to do list.

I absolutely love your painted block! It looks amazing!!

  2. Your FMQ is beautiful. I had the same problem. Sometimes in stead of curves more edges. And the outside became a litlle bit bigger.

  3. Wow, your stippling is AMAZING! Keep up thee good work. And that painted block.... sooo cool!

  4. Wow, look at that micro stippling!! I use a number of different filler patterns but have never been able to get the micro stippling. I like to use McTavishing in the background when I can't think of anything else. But there are tons of fillers! You're quilting is amazing!

  5. Your micro-stippling looks great! I ended up abandoning mine-really didn't like doing it at all. Ha! Glad you asked Leah about a different filler. Maybe that would work for me too!

  6. Your whole cloth project is looking good! Micro-stippling is very time consuming!

  7. The painted quilt is really cool! I'm impressed with your micro-stippling. I'm nervous about it. That's my project for this evening after the kiddos go to bed. :)

  8. Looking good! I can definitely see your confidence increasing with the scale between the inside and outside.

  9. i got the sharp points too. But if you stand back, you really can't tell at all. Yours is looking great! On you borders of your quilt, You could do long back and fourth u shapes. I did it on my borders of my hello kitty quilt. It went very fast and I loved the look. I think I have a picture of it a few blogs back! Just a suggestion;)

  10. Great job! I think the microstippling does blend in- I suspect the next "project" will have us using the filler designs from the project at this tiny scale...

It sure does take forever! My quilt is similarly not quite done. (I hope to post it later tonight)

  11. Nice job! Next time I need to try contrasting thread. Everyone's quilt that has done it looks great!

  12. The dark thread looks great against the yellow fabric, great work!!

  13. I'm really enjoying seeing everyone's finished quilts! This looks great Pat. Love your colours. I agree with the others who've said that the micro stippling looks amazingly good as soon as you step away from the quilt. Mine isn't on a small enough scale yet, but still gives the right effect.

  14. Love your FMQ - it looks amazing in the contrasting thread! And those Lumiere paints must look stunning on the green fabrics.

  15. Gorgeous work...and looking at your other your are super productive.

  16. I would never have the patience to quilt that microstippling all over the whole background, the middle portion would have been enough for me!

  17. Stunning work! You have mastered the microstippling so well. And that painted block for SewCalGal is a show stopper! You are very talented...!

  18. Your wholecloth quilt looks wonderful! And that painted block is absolutely gorgeous! Will you free motion quilt that now? Your work is fantastic! ~Jeanne
